This was the film poster I made for our ancillary task

How do you rate the overall packaging for the film? How effective was it? What have you learnt about packaging a film through the 3 different media platforms?

I think the overall packaging and advertising for Shawshank Redemption were very thorough and highlighted the thriller genre in each media platform. However, I couldn’t find an empire magazine cover for this film so instead I decided to analyse one for the Hulk, as it was another genre and another outlook and representation of the film. It showed and illustrated the main aspects of the film, and a new energy from it.

Although the magazine cover wasn’t for the trailer or for the poster I analysed, I thought each piece of media was very effective and they each got the audience interested for what their film held. This is thought as the main aspect of the film was presented on each product, including an element which was exciting about it, which then enabled the audiences to feel the excitement.

I have learnt that the main aspect from the film should be taken and illustrated in the type of media being focused on. For example, if it is the hulk then show is muscles and the anger he has, as it gets the audience interested and perhaps excited to find out more about the film. I’ve also learnt that both the poster and trailer focus on the film, one more in depth in the other, whilst the magazine is also advertising other films and other media platforms other than your film.

Hulk empire magazine front cover analysis

Empire magazine feature different films which are either out in the cinema or are soon going to be, they tell you information such as dates for the release of films, times, days when films are being shown, genre, narrative, rating, etc. The Hulk is clearly not the same genre as the trailer we have in mind, but looking into other genres and how a film present theirs is wider research.

The title of the film is clearly stated at the bottom in big and bold, coloured letters which represents the film. However, the names of the actors are not seen on the cover. The font of the name belonging to the magazine has changed subtly to match the genre of the film its advertising, perhaps giving the audience an insight to what the film is about, and with this, attracting the target audience, which in this case may be boys aged nine to fourteen. For example, the image below is featuring the same title but the front cover is advertising one of the Harry Potter films.

If you compare the two it can be seen that the magazine cover which is advertising The Hulk, has changed the title for the genre of the film and the narrative it wants to portray to an audience.

Next to the title of the film is ‘unleashed’, which may suggest that the title of the film is a person, or a creature that is dangerous and is loose. Another aspect which backs this suggestion up is the image on the front cover, as it portrays a creature that is big, with green eyes, and an angry face, is making his way through a cement wall with so much force the title of the magazine and the wall is cracking in protest. This aspect may be considered as very important as it will attract the target audience, and it would already have given them an idea about the film and perhaps the narrative. On the other hand, the colours chosen for the cover are grey, red, green and white perhaps to emphasize the genre the cover is advertising as they are bold colours.

Clues to the narrative are seen all over the cover, as it shows the strength of the man, his skin colour, his size, and it shows his abilities in the title effects and in the background. From the expression on the character’s face, it can be suggested that he is angry and that he wants something which he shouldn’t which the audience may guess the narrative of the film as action or sci-fi, as he is green, big, with bright green coloured eyes, and he is pushing apart a cement wall.

The size of the image takes the majority of the space, placed in the centre suggesting the character as a main character, which may be the idea the empire magazine graphic artist might be aiming for. However, the plot and genre of the film is hinted at but not clear, as the action he is portraying is one of which cannot be done by a human, but probably can be performed by someone who can’t die and has muscles that are much bigger than anything ever dreamed of.

The slogan on the cover is the Hulk unleashed which the wording ties into the title of the film. This tells us that the film includes action, perhaps a bit of sci-fi, and maybe a crime. On the other hand, no information about the film is shown as it doesn’t include the cast involved, the film’s rating, the film’s release date, etc. The only information linked to the film is the title and the slogan.

The unique selling point in the front cover is possibly the creature breaking through the cement wall with his hands, as it is an eye catcher because that action is probably impossible for somebody to do, and it isn’t something that is seen everyday, and for a little boy must be so exciting and thrilling to see. Also another possible unique selling point is the 3D front cover which is said to have on the cover, as that is probably the first one.

Crew contract

A crew contract is essential when trying to make a film; it enables the full support of the crew as well as their attendance. To make sure we have the same support when we’re making ours, we thought we’d make a contract and get all our crew to sign it. Like every contract the paragraph at the top of the page tells the member of the crew who is signing the contract about what is expected of them after having signed it, and the times they may be required to work extra hours. Our crew contract is below, illustrating all the above.

Who will be your distribution company ? Why?

We realised that are distribution company will have to be British, because it and film budgets will be similarly to ours, therefore easier to compete with other film. Also British distribution companies tend to be more supportive and less money hunger than the Americans. Consequently this mentality is better suited for our company. Out of the companies we had in mind, as a group felt that film4 would be the best to distribute our film. Film4 have been behind Academy Award winning films like: Slumdog Millionaire, Happy Go Lucky and This Is England, so have the expertise into make a film into a hit. Moreover their expertise spreads into our genre, which gives us greater confidence that they can market our film in the way we want it to be portrayed on all media platforms. Compared to BBC who is more firm and rigid when it comes to broadcasting and distributing programs, they may not fully believe in our idea hence there may be a lack of finance and attention.
